Major biomes include deserts, forests, grasslands, tundra, and several types of aquatic environments. Each biome consists of many ecosystems whose communities have adapted to the small differences in climate and the environment inside the biome. All living things are closely related to their environment.

DesertDeserts occur where rainfall is less than 50 cm/year. Although most deserts, such as the Sahara of North Africa and the deserts of the southwestern U.S., Mexico, and Australia, occur at low latitudes, another kind of desert, cold deserts, occur in the basin and range area of Utah and Nevada and in parts of western Asia.

Tropical RainforestThe tropical rainforest biome is an ecosystem that covers about 7% of the Earth’s surface. They are found all over the world but the majority of the tropical rainforest lies in South America in Brazil. The weather in the tropical rainforest is rainy yet pleasant all year round, day or night.

PrairieThe tallgrass prairie ecosystem that once stretched from the Great Plains to the Midwest (western Iowa through Illinois to western Indiana) is part of the Prairie Peninsula. Illinois, Iowa and Missouri are completely included in this unique biome. This area is best known for its tallgrass prairies. .
